Kayan Mentarang National Park (KMNP) was gazetted in 1996 with 1.35 million hectares along East Kalimantan’s borders with Sabah and Serawak. The area initially was established as a Nature Reserve in 1980. Elevations range from 300 to 2000 meters above sea level, with less than 5% below 500 m and more than 45% above 1000 m. Betung Kerihun National Park was determined by the Ministry of Forestry as a national park on September 1995. This Park is located in Putussibau and Embalih district, Kapuas Hulu regency, West Kalimantan. In the Bahau Hulu sub-district, not too far from the village of Long Alango, the Tropical Forest Research Station of Lalut Birai will surprise visitors. Lalut Birai has served as a research and documentation center on the ecology of tropical forest for over 10 years. The research station was built by local people and WWF-Indonesia in the tana ulen, or traditionally protected forest of the people of Long Alango, in 1991.
