Tana Toraja, a famous tourist attraction with its cultural wealth. District is located approximately 350 km north of Makassar is very popular with the customary form of house building. The traditional house called Tongkonan. The roof was made of nipa or palm leaves and can survive up to 50 years. Tongkonan also has undergraduate degrees in accordance strata of nobility like the gold, bronze, iron and brass.

The road from Makassar or Ujung Pandand to Toraja runs along the coast for about 130 km’s and then hits the mountains. After the entrance to Tana Toraja you enter a majestic landscape with giant gray, granites and stones and blue mountains at a distance after passing the market village of Mebali. Kayan Mentarang National Park (KMNP) was gazetted in 1996 with 1.35 million hectares along East Kalimantan’s borders with Sabah and Serawak. The area initially was established as a Nature Reserve in 1980. Elevations range from 300 to 2000 meters above sea level, with less than 5% below 500 m and more than 45% above 1000 m. In the Bahau Hulu sub-district, not too far from the village of Long Alango, the Tropical Forest Research Station of Lalut Birai will surprise visitors. Lalut Birai has served as a research and documentation center on the ecology of tropical forest for over 10 years. The research station was built by local people and WWF-Indonesia in the tana ulen, or traditionally protected forest of the people of Long Alango, in 1991.
